Why We Are Lawcruiters (Giving Thanks)

For those who don't know any better - the life of a legal recruiter is one to be envied. We've all heard the cliches about "dialing for dollars"...

For those somewhat more in the know - the life of a legal recruiter seems like one to be avoided. The endless telephone calls to an endless list of harried lawyers trying their best to end the conversation; the incredible competition for candidates and clients; the deals that die at the last minute; the rejected offers; the retracted offers; the endless frustration of working with people who have no interest in helping a lawcruiter earn his/her fee; the endless stream of no, no, no, no, no!!..

On this Thanksiving holiday, here are a few thoughts as to why this legal recruiter, anyway, is truly thankful that he is... a Lawcruiter:

  1. The people: Lawyers are, by and large, an unusually energetic, insightful, intelligent, creative, eloquent, well-mannered and self-motivated lot. We are truly blessed to be spending our time working with them.
  2. Moral Validation - Macro: Lawyers are blessed/cursed with the talent that earns them the responsibility of documenting and/or resolving the most critical economic relationships in our increasingly intermingled global economy. Our efforts in helping these folks find the best place to be using these talents go a long way towards ensuring that these talents are used, for the benefit of our society, in the best way possible.
  3. Moral Validation- Micro: We help people do hard things. We help our clients meet their practice development and attorney hiring needs. We help lawyers get good jobs in fine firms. We are thanked for our efforts. We make friends. What could be better?
  4. Fun: "If it's not fun - it's not worth doing." Yes - the fees are great. Yes - the community is endlessly challenging and fascinating. Yes - its a great way of exercising an innovative entrepreneurial instinct. But ultimately - it's fun. The most fun I could imagine having at "work". And certainly more fun then this lawcruiter ever had when he practiced law - and for that, Lawcruiter is most thankful of all!
